"Blue Footed Booby Close-Up"

Scientific name: Sula nebouxii
Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

©2003

There are a few moments in one's life when a favorite wild animal allows you to approach them.  This was one of those moments for me.  This Blue Footed Booby was calmly sitting as if to pose for my photo.  It barely even moved it's head to bother to look over at where I stopped to crouch down to take the photo about 5 feet away.

It is amazing how unafraid many of the animals of the Galapagos Islands are of humans. During the course of evolution, Blue Footed Boobies have lost their predator instinct and have no fear of humans.   In other words, it would not occur to them that humans (or anything approaching them on land for that matter) would harm them. Unfortunately, Spanish settlers used this to their advantage and hunted them.  Blue Footed Boobies came to be known as "bobos" which means "clown" in spanish because of their perceived lack of intelligence.  The name Booby was derived from this Spanish name.

Male and female Blue Footed Boobies can be differentiated by looking at the size of the pupil in their eye. Females have a darkly pigmented ring around their pupil making it appear larger and males lack this pigment ring.
