"Little Kuna Girl #1"

San Blas Islands, Panama

©2004

I couldn't resist my request for a photo of this precious Kuna Indian child.  She was so sweet and came up to us with her adorned iguana (on her head...and yes, it's real).  She decided to go with a dramatic look for her pose instead of the smile she had when we met.

The Kuna Indians of the San Blas Islands in Panama have managed to protect their traditions and way of life from outside influences.  The women wear traditional clothing and wrap their legs with long strands of beads that make colorful patterns.  The blouse is made from two intricately sewn pieces called molas.  A mola is made from brightly colored squares of fabric layered on top of one another and then cut to form patterns or a design. The layers are then sewn together to hold the design in place.
